Graffiti Design were invited by the Lush Cosmetics Company to create some eye-catching new signage for their retail premises in White City.
This project was part of a complete re-vamp of Lush Cosmetics’ external and internal signs. The team at Lush were keen on having some graphics with a large slice of FUN!
We’ve worked with Lush before, and it’s always exciting to mix new techniques and technologies with unusual materials. The brief offered us a lot of creative stimulation and some unique challenges. The aim was to create eclectic signage conveying the essence of Lush products and policies. The bold and colourful displays and store fascia needed an instant appeal, to tempt in the customer for an enjoyable and entertaining experience.
We created some self-supporting F-U-N lettering in bold primary colours for an internal display. These were mounted free-standing on a shelf. We designed some attention-grabbing wall signs showcasing the various Lush cosmetic products, and some arresting multi-layered block lettering for the exterior frontage. To produce these modern and high-impact images, we turned to acrylics, vinyl, HDPu and aluminium materials… together with soap and honey! To comply with the Lush company’s green policy, all the materials we used were either recycled or recyclable.
The Lush Cosmetics Company is a business founded on ethics. All their products are guaranteed to be free from animal testing and animal by-products, as well as environmentally friendly. They are committed to using renewables and recyclables, and to using all-natural ingredients for their cosmetic products. Lush’s ongoing commitment to these policies is an indicator of their 21st-century corporate outlook.
This is a modern company that takes environmental protection very seriously, but their branding makes great use of vivid and attractive designs. We were therefore looking to come up with an appealing style that was both ethically sound and dramatic. While we employed some CNC machinery and paint plant, the signs we produced for Lush were predominantly finished by hand. The job took us three weeks, and we found it was an interesting new challenge to make signs using honey!
Our biggest job, however, was to align the huge, multi-layered suspended sign for the shop frontage. This striking nameplate instantly draws the eye, with five different sizes and depths of lettering. These were placed in acrylic panels, and ranged from outline to shadow to fully blocked capitals. The sign was enormous, and the different layers of lettering had to be precisely lined up to perfectly produce the required multidimensional effect.
This large and complex shop front sign was so successful that it was voted “Retail Sign of the Year” at the 2018 National Sign Awards.
